Course Aim: RYA Competent Crew or RYA Day Skipper
Minimum Standard: If you want to undertake the RYA Competent Crew certificate no experience is required. For those wanting to complete the RYA Day Skipper certificate the following experirence is required. 5 days onboard a yacht, including 4 night hours and 100 miles in tidal waters Completion of a Day Skipper Theory shore-based course is definitely an advantage and is highly recommended
Whether you are a complete beginner and would like to undertake your RYA Competent Crew certificate or are ready to complete the RYA Day Skipper certificate, this five day course accommodates both syllabi.
The sailing area will include the North Wales coastline, Anglesey and the Llýn Peninsular depending upon weather conditions. Please note that all harbour fees will be covered by Plas Menai.
You will be sailing in the day and mooring up each evening and there will be the opportunity to go ashore most evenings. The course is very hands-on and you will be actively involved in sailing the boat throughout the week.
RYA Competent Crew
The RYA Competent Crew syllabus covers basic seamanship and helmsmanship skills such as sail handling, rope work, steering, mooring, anchoring and basic chartwork, as well as learning the basics of sailing and assisting with all the daily routines onboard.
RYA Day Skipper
This is an essential course if you want to develop as a sailor and aspire to sailing a yacht safely and confidently. We will develop your skills in weather and tidal interpretation. The course will concentrate on pilotage, coastal passage planning, boat handling, skippering techniques and emergency situations.
Certification: The RYA Day Skipper certificate requires a passport photograph. Please remember to bring a photograph with you, otherwise we will not be able to issue your certificate.
The Yacht
The yacht you will be staying onboard, is commercially coded by RYA/MCA as category 2 compliant, which is 60 miles from a safe haven and is able to carry 6 people including the Skipper. Facilities include on-board heating, hot water and a fridge and it is equipped with Radar and GPS. The yacht has a big boat feel, wheel steering and a powerful mast head rig.
Meals Onboard
The yacht will be stocked for at least three meals a day, including snacks and drinks. If you wish to, you may bring a bottle of something to enjoy in the evenings, when you are moored up. We can cater for any special dietary requirements but please inform our bookings team before arrival, to ensure that the correct food is taken on board.
Kit and Clothing
Plas Menai will provide waterproofs and lifejackets, however you are very welcome to bring your own if you wish.
Arrival Information
Your course starts on Sunday evening. On arrival please go to reception to register for your course. An evening meal is included in your course fee and is served in the centre’s dining room between 18.00-18.30hrs.
Please meet in reception at 20.00hrs where you will be met by your instructor for the week. Your instructor will issue you with waterproofs (if required) before taking you down to the yacht on which you will be spending the week. Please remember to bring a sleeping bag with you.
Low Season Pricing
Our 2013 high season operates between 21 April and 21 September. At all other times the course is offered at our low season pricing. If you are booking a course within this period the reduced rate will be applied to your course during the booking process.
