Improving Techniques

Duration: 5 Days

Course Aim: RYA Seamanship Skills/Sailing with Spinnakers/Better Sailing

Minimum Standard: You should be able to sail comfortably around a triangular course in force 2-3 winds

As soon as you have mastered the basics in double-handers, you'll want to move on and develop your boat handling, teamwork, seamanship and confidence in stronger winds and on tidal waters.

This course will work from the RYA syllabi Seamanship Skills and Sailing with Spinnakers as outlined in the G4 RYA National Sailing Scheme Syllabus and Logbook. Laser 2000’s and Laser Stratos’s will be used for the Seamanship Skills course along with some time in single-handed dinghies, including Lasers and Picos. The main aim is to improve overall performance such as upwind and downwind sailing, tacking and gybing.

We will also look at seamanship skills such as person overboard, coming alongside and anchoring, basic navigation, tides, safety and weather. You should then progress onto some of our higher performance boats including the Laser Vago, RS 200 and RS 400 to cover aspects of the Sailing with Spinnakers course.

This course is suitable for anyone who is looking to build on their basic skills. If you are comfortable helming a dinghy around a triangular course, sailing in force 2-3 winds and feel ready to take on more challenging conditions, then this is the course for you.
