Learn to Sail
Duration: 5 Days
Course Aim: RYA Start Sailing & RYA Basic Skills certificates
Minimum Standard: None
Learning to sail for the first time is great fun and an opportunity to learn new skills. The sense of achievement you'll feel when you've mastered the basics and sail on your own for the first time will stay with you forever. On this course you get the chance to try all types of small boat sailing, starting with the Laser Stratos or Laser 2000 with an instructor onboard with you.
As soon as you feel confident with basic skills such as rigging, launching, landing, tacking, gybing and sailing to windward, your instructor will then coach you from a safety boat. After two days double-handed sailing we’ll then introduce you to single-handed sailing, using stable dinghies such as the Pico.
After a day’s introduction to the world of cat sailing, you’ll soon be sailing around confidently in our stable and easily handled Dart 16’s. Finally, but by no means least you will spend one day learning to sail one of our eight-metre keelboats and go on a short passage along the Menai Strait. All in all a great introduction to sailing.
Weather and wind conditions may change the schedule, but you’ll still enjoy as much sailing in as wide variety of boats as possible.
During the week you will also be introduced to some of the basic theory of sailing, including basic weather, tides, safety and seamanship, all taught in a practical and engaging way.
Your week will follow the RYA guidelines for the ‘Start Sailing’ and ‘Basic Skills’ syllabus, as outlined in the RYA Dinghy Sailing Beginners Handbook.
