RYA Dinghy Instructor

Duration: 5 Days

Course Aim: RYA Dinghy Instructor

Minimum Standard: Please see pre-entry requirements listed below

One of our most popular coach education courses, Plas Menai has been training Dinghy Instructors for over 25 years and our highly qualified and experienced RYA Coaches will ensure you get the very best instructor training.

The five day course covers all aspects of teaching beginners and improvers to sail and is the first rung on the sailing instructor ladder. During the week you will be taught the RYA’s teaching framework known as ‘The Method’ which encompasses single and double handed sailing. The week is very intensive and will include some evening sessions.

It is important you are as prepared as possible before arriving at the centre, making sure you have read a current copy of G14, G4 and G11 before the course and please remember to bring these with you.

In order to become a dinghy instructor, candidates need to fulfil some pre-entry requirements as follows;

Pre-entry Requirements

1. Demonstrate sailing ability under the supervision of an RYA coach as detailed in G14/05 (pre-entry test)

2. Prove competence in basic first aid, including hypothermia and resuscitation (hold a recognised first aid certificate)

3. Prove ability to drive a powerboat (hold RYA National Powerboat Certificate, Level 2)

4. Completion of pre-course work

As the name suggests, these requirements are needed BEFORE attending the course and the evidence must be bought with you when you attend the course.

In exceptional circumstances a candidate may be accepted on the course without their completed pre-entry requirements, i.e. where they have attended a pre-entry weekend but were unable to be tested due to lack of wind. They will not, however, have their instructor qualification processed until they have supplied us with proof of the pre-entry requirements, which should be within 6 months of attending the course.

RYA Membership

It is not a requirement for Dinghy Instructors to be personal members of the RYA, however, non-members incur an administration fee (£40.00) for the issue of their instructor certificate. Join the RYA
