Once you’re confident about your basic paddling and safety skills on sheltered water you can go on and expand your horizons on this popular course.
The aim of the course is to continue to develop good efficient paddling techniques with an emphasis on practical applications in a variety of locations. In this respect, our proximity to both white water and sea paddling locations adds greatly to the scope of this course and you wil be introduced to the basics of white water paddling, surfing skills and sea kayaking. We’ll also use our heated pool to develop your rolling techniques and rescue skills.
By the end of the week you should have gained greater confidence in your kayaking skills and be ready to progress to greater independence in the sport. You should also be ready to move up to one of our more advanced specialist courses and hopefully achieve the new BCU 2 star award which includes some open boat canoeing, or have an action plan for achieving the award at a later date.
This course attracts the widest variety of paddlers, from people returning to the sport after some time away, to regular paddlers who wish to develop more advanced techniques. To ensure reasonable compatibility within the group, we would expect at least a week’s paddling experience and the ability to paddle competently on flat water. If you have only been paddling a couple of times or haven’t paddled for years, you should book onto the Learn to Kayak course.
