Keelboat Adventure - Explore the Menai Strait

Explore the Menai Strait onboard one of the Centre’s four J80 keelboats. Ideal for day sailing, our keelboats can comfortably take five people plus the skipper.

On the first morning, guided by your keelboat skipper you will cover some basic navigation theory and develop a passage plan for both days taking into account the local weather and tidal conditions. You can expect to spend most of the day away from the Centre returning at approximately 5pm, so don’t foget to bring your lunch with you each day!

Enjoy the pace onboard as you are given a new perspective of the Menai Strait with its beautiful scenery and landmarks, many of which cannot be seen or appreciated in the same way from the land.

Admire the lions guarding the entrance to Britannia Bridge, which were hidden from view, when the bridge was rebuilt in the 1980’s after a dramatic fire, see Caernarfon Castle in all its spectacular grandeur, or visit beautiful Abermenai at the entrance to the Menai Strait

There may also be the opportunity to go ashore at various locations if you wish, where you can stretch your legs, sample the local cuisine or do spot of sightseeing or shopping.

Over the course of the weekend if you wish, you will be taught the basics of keelboat sailing, including tacking, gybing, anchoring and mooring, although the main focus is to have an enjoyable weekend sailing and sightseeing rather than following a specific course outline.

Kit and Clothing

Plas Menai provides all necessary kit, equipment and personal protective clothing including buoyancy aids, cagoules and waterproofs, however you are very welcome to bring your own if you wish

This course is Non-Residential. If you would like to book as a resident, please add the two day residential package under ‘Optional Extras’ when booking. The residential package includes two nights’ accommodation and full board for the duration of your stay.
