RYA First Aid
Duration: 1 Day
Course Aim: RYA First Aid
Minimum Standard: None
This course provides the basic information needed to deal with emergencies in a watersports environment. The course lasts for one day and covers the following areas:
- Injuries
- Illnesses
- Unconsciousness
- Hypothermia
- Resuscitation
- CPR
The emphasis is on first aid afloat, so most of the teaching is targeted at dealing with casualties in a marine environment. For example, the course includes seasickness and dehydration, the recovery position in a confined space, cold shock and hypothermia from immersion and /or exposure and seeking medical assistance or advice by VHF.
The First Aid trainers are watersports practitioners and will use their experience to help you consider ways of adapting and improvising the standard procedures whilst aboard a small, mobile vessel. The course fulfils the requirements for professional skippers of small craft working within 60 miles of safe haven.
The course is recommended by the MCA and HSE, and satisfies the requirements of some categories of commercial work afloat, including Boatmasters. The certificate is also the minimum acceptable for RYA practical instructors, Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster exam candidates and other marine qualifications.
You will be issued with the St John’s Ambulance and Red Cross First Aid Manual during the course.
