Youth Sailing: Pico, Topper, Laser (12-16yrs)
Duration: 5 Days
Course Aim: RYA Youth Sailing Scheme Stage 1-3 depending upon ability and previous experience
Minimum Standard: None
This week is ideal for sailors who are ready to move on from the Optimist or Terra, or for those who want to learn to sail for the first time but are too old or too big for the Junior Sailing dinghies.
During this week you will be helming your boat for the whole time and you’ll be amazed at how quickly you progress. Over the week we will cover a whole range of different aspects of sailing, including rigging, launching and recovery, tacking and gybing, sail setting and capsize drills and by the end of the week you will have developed into a confident sailor.
You will learn how to sail around a short course and as the week progresses we will introduce you to racing on the Menai Strait. For those who are already familiar with basic sailing techniques we will develop your racing skills and tactics and hone and sharpen your sailing techiques.
Confident experienced sailors will get the opportunity to spend time in our Laser dinghies, for which we have specialist youth rigs, (the 4.7 and Radial), which will help you develop your skills. For those who have little or no experience, you will spend the week sailing in our Picos and Toppers.
House Parents
In the evenings our House Parents organise evening activities for everyone staying at the Centre on our youth activity courses. They supervise the children and are responsible for their safety and welfare.
I have been on this course before...
If you have participated on this course before but have not sailed since and want to stay sailing single handers, we recommend you rebook this course. No two courses are ever the same and there is always something new to learn and exisiting skills to develop.
If you do sail on a regular basis, then please email Ed Curtis, one of our Dinghy Coaches who will be able advise as to which is the best course to move on to. Please be aware Ed is often on the water so it might take a day or two to receive a response, but he will get back to you!
Kit and Clothing
Plas Menai provides all necessary kit, equipment and personal protective clothing including wetsuits, buoyancy aids, cagoules and waterproofs, however you are very welcome to bring your own if you wish. Please bring towels and a change of footwear for on the water.
