DofE Sea Kayak Expedition Training
Duration: 5 Days
Course Aim: Gold Practice Expedition &Training (Kayak)
Minimum Standard: BCU 2* or equivalent. The ability to canoe roll is recommended but not essential
This five day course is aimed at DofE participants who are looking to hone their existing paddling skills and undertake a practice expedition in preparation for their qualifying expedition.
The course will cover all the elements of planning an expedition, including route planning, navigation and chartwork, wild camping, brush craft and the preparation of meals, dealing with emergency situations, safety considerations, weather, tides and clothing
Some time will also be spent in kayaks honing your existing skills and ensuring your paddling skills are up to the required standard.
Please note:This course is not an introduction to paddling. It is expected that anyone booking onto this course is already at the standard required to complete the qualifying expedition
Any students undertaking their practise or qualifying expedition at Plas Menai must hold a VHF radio licence, as this will be their main emergency communication tool whilst on the expedition. The week includes the one day VHF radio course.
During the week students will plan a practice expedition of at least two days and two nights during which they will be remotely supervised.
Throughout the week students will discuss, review and assess their performance with their course supervisor to identify any areas for improvement, prior to undertaking their Gold Qualifying Expedition
