DofE Yacht Expedition Training

Minimum Standard: At least RYA Competent Crew but preferably RYA Day Skipper standard. Day Skipper Theory

This five day course is aimed at DofE participants who are looking to;brush up their existing sailing skills and who wish to undertake a practice expedition in preparation for their Gold Qualifying Expedition.

The course will cover all the elements of planning an expedition onboard a yacht, including navigation and chartwork, the preparation of meals in a small galley kitchen, dealing with emergency situations, safety considerations, weather, tides and clothing.

Any students undertaking their practise or qualifying expedition at Plas Menai must hold a VHF radio licence. The week includes the one day VHF radio course which will be undertaken on Monday

You will board the yacht on Monday evening and will live aboard for the remainder of the week. As well as covering expedition planning, time will also be spent practicing your boat handling skills, including coming alongside, picking up moorings, anchoring and sail setting.

<p><strong>Please note:</strong> This course is not an introduction to yacht sailing. It is expected that anyone booking onto this course is already at the standard required to complete the qualifying expedition.</p>

During the week students will plan a practice expedition and spend at least one day and one night undertaking the expedition.

Throughout the week students will discuss, review and assess their performance with their Skipper to identify any areas for improvement, prior to undertaking their Gold Qualifying Expedition.

For all yacht-based practice and qualifying expeditions a Skipper will be onboard at all times. As such the maximium team size for this type of expedition at Plas Menai is five.
