Where an RYA Instructor certificate requires an in-date First Aid certificate in order to remain valid, the RYA will accept a one-year extension on any suitable First Aid certificate. As an RYA First Aid Centre we are offering a short update, delivered via video conferencing, Teams.

The session is delivered by our experienced team of First Aid Instructors. Caroline Pearson our Chief Cruising Instructor and powerboat trainer, Oli Booth one of our multi skilled senior instructors and also delivers the Rescue 3 courses to the emergency services and Ali Yates our Operations and Programming manager, Dinghy coach assessor and Windsurf trainer with over 25 years’ experience of being in the industry and a First Aider.

The team will take you through the update in a discussion based interactive way drawing on their broad experience.

The update will include:

  • Primary survey of a casualty and scene
  • Management of unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally
  • Management of an unresponsive casualty who is not breathing normally: Including the latest ResusUK advice concerning conducting CPR during the COVID-Pandemic
  • Managing bleeding
  • Recognising and managing shock
  • Near drowning

Instructors should make every effort to fully update their First Aid qualification at the earliest opportunity to maintain a sufficient level of duty of care to students and to alleviate pressure on those who are being relied upon as full first aiders.

For full details on how this update will help with the First Aid cover at your RYA centre or club please visit

As the Welsh National Centre we are offering this update to support RYA instructors, clubs and centres back into boating, in the hope it may help some of the boating community overcome the barriers to get back to teaching.

The extensions will last for one year from the expiry of a certificate. We are looking forward to be running our usual regular RYA First Aid Courses at Plas Menai as soon as we are able to.

The First Aid Update will be delivered via Microsoft Teams - All details on how to join will be included in your email confirmation, you will receive this on completing your booking.

If this is your first time using Microsoft Teams, please allow yourself some extra time prior to the online course start time to get yourself set up and connected.
